I read the comments on my Spyware blog entry. Jajey mentioned Yahoo's toolbar. Dave commented that worked like spyware. Yahoo's blocker ironically does work like spyware. I still prefer using Spybot and Ad-Aware (which by the way was the 1st ever anti-spyware prog). To prevent spyware from installing in the first place, or after the PC's been cleaned by the two, I use Spyware Blaster. Again, all three are free solutions that work better than most pay-for-use anti-spyware products available out there. If all three are updated and run at least once a week, you'll be relatively safe from spyware.
If you really can't live without a toolbar on your Internet Explorer, use Google Bar. I agree with Dave, that the best remedy would still be not using I.E. altogether. It's safer to use Firefox or Mozilla. With Firefox you don't need a toolbar since it already has a search bar built-in.

bro, additional tips!
1. don't visit porno and other dubious sites. spammers and spyware makers takes advantage of a man's virtual libido to pursue their scheming ways.
2. don't just click anything on a site just because it says "Click this". More often that not, you'll get bullshit.
3. relative to item # 1, don't install anything just because you'll have access to hundreds of porno photos. you see them, they see you.
3. protect yourself, use condoms, err a personal firewall. some spywares deliberately scan the internet for open ports and voila, spyware is there!
remember, security from spywares, malwares, adwares and viruses is not all about the softwares... security is a process and its on the users.
oh yes, being a linux fanatic... use LINUX! :))
